Junior High Experience

Bishop Guilfoyle Junior High School

Junior High School Program

The goal of the Junior High School Program (grades 6, 7, 8) is to enable each student to move beyond elementary school and begin to establish their own identity as an emerging young adult.  Just the right amount of support and freedom is a key aspect of BG’s Junior High. Strong academics establish high expectations.  Numerous opportunities, including sports teams, drama, arts, student council, and many more help students identify their interests, skills and identity.  The program is suitable for a wide range of learning styles and ablities due to the personalized nature of the classes. Eadh teacher knows their students and can connect in a positive, safe environment.

Academically, BG provides a challenging curriculum in a technologically advanced learning program. It is designed to help students move out of the elementary school mindset and develop a strong study habits and practices (executive function skills), according to the developmental needs in this age range. Many students begin to take high school level courses while in Junior High, but it is not required.

The goal is that they enter high school well prepared with the academic background and habits needed to take full advantage of our many course offerings, including advanced placement and college in high school programs as well as foundational skills to succeed in the workforce or military.

If a student wishes to enter an advanced track, we offer a program where they can complete 2 full years of college and earn an associates degree from Mount Aloysius upon graduation from BG, thus accelerating their four year degree.

Pre-AP® Preparatory Program – Grades 7 and 8

BG's challenging Pre-AP® Curriculum, with a selective admission process, is designed to meet the needs of advanced learners to prepare them for the rigor of taking college-level courses while in high school. It uses advanced teaching methods to develop a range of academic skills needed for later success. In addition, it covers high school academic content, freeing later years to take more college-level courses.

Classes are designed to be rigorous preparation for AP® Courses and are intended to be challenging yet beneficial to students demonstrating above-grade-level readings, projects, and activities. The coursework requires students to engage in independent and analytical assignments and complete a substantial amount of work outside the classroom.

One-to-One Technology

At BG, we understand that technologies are vital for students’ futures. Therefore, each student is provided an Apple iPad upon enrollment. The one-to-one technology device transforms the classroom into a learning environment that gives teachers and students unlimited access to worldwide educational resources. In addition, it is also a tool that assists teachers with students’ different styles of learning. We are committed to staying up to date in all aspects of technology enabled learning so students are well equipped after high school.
